I’ve been creating Minecraft build tutorials for well over two years now and I’ve learned a lot since then. As much as I love to teach you how to do something, I think it’s just as important to show you what not to do. That way, you can save yourself a lot of time and avoid making the same mistakes I made when I first started! So today I’m going to share with you the four most common beginner mistakes I see and show you how to not build in Minecraft (and of course, what to do instead).
How to NOT Build in Minecraft (4 Common Beginner Mistakes) and What to Do Instead!
Mistake #1 - Using Only One Block
A common mistake I see when first starting out is building with one type of block. Look familiar? It’s okay, we’ve all been there! The problem with building with one type of block is that it just doesn’t draw the eyes and ends up looking very plain and boring.
Here’s What You Should Do Instead:
Try replacing the oak planks with stripped oak logs for the walls and oak logs for the corners of the house for more variety and texture. This house still needs a lot of work, but doesn’t it already look a little better?
Mistake #2 - Building Flat
The next common beginner mistake I see is when players build the walls completely flat. So, even though we’re using a variety of different blocks and textures, there’s no depth.
Here’s What You Should Do Instead:
Wow! What a transformation right? What we did here was added a small porch by placing oak planks inside the house and continuing it outside, finishing off with oak stairs to create a small porch. Then, we raised the house by one extra block, moving the door up.
Bring the oak log cabins forward to create columns and the oak stairs on the roof to create an overhang. Finally, we placed the door from the inside to create further depth.
Lastly, instead of using glass blocks for the windows, try glass panes!
Mistake #3 - Building a Square-Shaped House
But wait… didn’t you just build a square house? Yes, I did! And although there is nothing wrong with building a square-shaped house (or even a rectangle-shaped house), it’s still by its very nature a box. And there’s nothing really super exciting about it.
Here’s What You Should Do Instead:
You can simply add to the square-shaped house by building out on the side creating an l-shape, which is a lot more interesting than a square! Then, connect the roof and add some glass panes for the window. This house is really starting to take shape!
Mistake #4 - Ignoring the Details
One of the easiest and often overlooked steps when building a house is ignoring the details and final touches by not adding plants, flowers, and leaves to your property. It adds SO much and can easily be done by utilizing the surrounding area’s natural resources.
Here’s What You Should Do Instead:
In this example, I’m going to assume we’re utilizing blocks found in the plains biome. So here, you can see that I added a couple of tall grasses in front of the oak logs and placed potted mushrooms on the porch for some color! I also decided to go around and add oak leaves for the bushes and used oak signs to fence them in. Don’t forget to add lamps to each corner of the roof overhang!
Pro tip: Stick to 3 to 4 types of flowers and plants to stay consistent and cohesive.
The Takeaway
Sometimes it’s easier to learn how to not build in Minecraft than it is to teach you how to build in Minecraft. We can learn from our mistakes and work to improve our builds by following these simple tips. I hope you got a lot of value from this blog post and if you did, please let me know!
