Suppose you're just starting out playing Minecraft. In that case, you may be surprised by the sheer number of materials available in the game. This could be overwhelming when figuring out what materials to build with. However, we've got you covered with our recommendations for the best building materials in the game.

First, ask yourself what you will use the materials for.

Are you building a temporary survival hut, or are you building your permanent base?

Make sure you take into account durability and how common the material is. If a block is easy to find and can stand up to creeper explosions and trespassing Endermen, consider using it.

To help get you started, we've rounded up our top six best building materials in Minecraft. We've also included examples of the kinds of houses you can build with each material.

Dirt

Dirt may not be the most aesthetically pleasing building material or practical for a permanent base. Still, this block is perfect in the first few days of your survival game.

There's a near-infinite supply of dirt that can be mined quickly. So you can build a temporary hut in a pinch to shelter yourself from aggressive mobs. While it is not an excellent material for a permanent structure, it can help you during the game's early stages or when you need to survive the night.

Wood Planks

Wood planks are, of course, a necessity for even the most experienced Minecraft players. Wood logs are easily obtained in most biomes and come in many shades that can complement any aesthetic you might be looking for.

Planks have a modest blast resistance of 3, making them a good choice for your first house before you're able to upgrade to a more durable material.

Cobblestone

Cobblestone is one of the most accessible blocks, and its durability makes it the ideal building material for your house.

Not only will your first decent tool in-game be cobblestone, but it can also make your home stronger!

It has a blast resistance of 6, meaning it can stand up to creeper explosions. In addition, if you build a wall that is two cobblestone blocks thick, it will hold up even more to any explosions nearby.

Basalt

If you spend a lot of time in the Nether, Basalt is a great resource to build with. It has a blast resistance of 4.2, meaning it can stand up to creepers and other mobs.

Basalt spawns in basalt deltas and soul sand valleys, and it's not terribly hard to find. Furthermore, it can be mined with any pickaxe, making it accessible to many players. So next time you're in the Nether, check this block out!

Bricks

Bricks are a robust and sturdy material. While it's somewhat expensive and time-consuming to craft or buy bricks, the result is aesthetically pleasing and protective.

Bricks have a blast resistance of 6, making them one of the best choices for building a durable house. So if you're looking for aesthetics and durability, choose bricks as one of your building materials.

Obsidian

Obsidian is the heavy hitter on this list! If you want to build a nearly impenetrable house, obsidian is the way. It has a mind-blowing blast resistance of 1200, making it invulnerable to vanilla explosions.

Unfortunately, obsidian can be challenging to obtain. You'll need a diamond pickaxe and lots of patience to mine this material. Still, it will be worth it if you're looking for a block that will make your house or any other structure virtually invincible!

Final Thoughts

There are hundreds of building materials to choose from in Minecraft. Still, only some of those materials will be a good choice for building a house or base that can withstand unfriendly mobs. So first, consider a material's durability and how common or uncommon it is. Then, you'll be able to find the perfect material for your next build!
